Today, I was 40 minutes into my workout when I glanced down and realized I was wearing two completely different sneakers—one Adidas, and one Hoka. Luckily, they were both black, though one had a noticeably higher heel than the other.
It reminded me of a time when I organized a major event where I was the keynote speaker. I confidently took the stage, delivered my talk, and only realized later—back in my building’s lobby—that I’d worn two completely different shoes: one shiny, rounded-toe black shoe and one matte, pointy-toe.
The truth is, like many of us, I’m juggling a lot—tight schedules, constant deadlines, and countless responsibilities. (I’ve even perfected the art of drying my hair in a taxi with the windows down while applying makeup on the go!) But here’s what I’ve learned from these small mishaps:
1. Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff: Odds are, no one noticed my mismatched shoes—and if they did, it didn’t detract from my message, my delivery, or my impact. The value I brought to the stage wasn’t in what I wore but in what I shared.
2. Authenticity Over Perfection: In a world increasingly flooded with AI-generated, picture-perfect content, people crave authenticity. Imperfections aren’t flaws—they’re signs of being human. They remind us that it’s okay to be real, vulnerable, and uniquely you.
3. Learn to Laugh at Yourself: Life is too short to take every detail seriously. Laughing at these little blunders isn’t just a coping mechanism—it’s a sign of self-awareness and self-love. It shows resilience and the ability to focus on what truly matters.
At the end of the day, perfection isn’t what connects us—authenticity does. Sometimes, that means rocking mismatched shoes and owning it.
